| tiffer0220's Full Review: Bergen Record |
I grew up reading The Bergen Record. I can remember reading it when I was 7 years old, I have read it while I was serving in the Army in South Carolina and Missouri, and now living in Florida I still read it.
Serving one of the richest counties in New Jersey, the Bergen Record started out as a small paper for the locals to get their news. It still serves as a newspaper, but it is no longer a small town paper, and it serves much more than the locals of Hackensack, New Jersey. I know of many people who have moved to Southern New Jersey or even to Florida who still read the Bergen Record everyday. While I may not be a considered a 'local' of Bergen County anymore, I am still a native and still interested in what is going on there.
The Bergen Record covers mostly the state, county and local news. But they never neglect the events in the world around us. I am not one to buy a paper simply for the fact of it's coverage of world events, I want to know what's happening where I live. But if I wanted to know what else is happening in the world, I would not have to buy a separate paper. Compared to USA Today, or The NY Times, the Record really cannot compete with them. This is a paper devoted mostly to state, county and local news. Those 2 other papers are big time world newspapers.
On Wednesday's, the Bergen Record has a pull out section called Community. Here you can read about recent engagements, weddings, High School reunions coming up, who joined the military, a swap shop for readers, recent births, and a singles section where singles can post or respond to ads.
I am not a person to read the sports section, however, the Bergen Record does a great coverage of the High School sports in the county. Before each season, they will do a profile of the teams, pointing out the top players stats. Each week they do a profile called athlete of the week. Here they will write a small profile on a high school athlete and interview the athlete. In another section of the paper they will have scholar of the week. Same concept as the athlete, only this is a high school student who stands out.
I have never subscribed to the Bergen Record. Instead I would just grab a copy each day from the store. Daily papers cost $.50 and the Sunday paper is $1.50. While living in Florida, I have been reading their local newspaper, but it just isn't the same. It does not make me feel like they are writing about things that are of interest to them. The reporters here seem to lack the compassion I have found the Bergen Record reporters to have.
Well in closing, I still enjoy reading The Bergen Record everyday. Even though I no longer read an actual paper, I read it online. Their website and online newspaper can be found at: http://www.bergen.com/
